The Scout Uniform

The new Scout Uniform consists of a;

  2. Woggle (of personal choice -cane woggles are reserved for leaders who are in or have completed training)
  3. Dark blue Scout shirt
  4. Dark blue Scout trousers (with removable calves)
  5. Brown or black shoes
  6. Unit Flash (10th Dublin (Kilternan)) white on a blue background (available from the group).
  7. County badge (3 Rock) (available from the group)
  8. Patrol flash
  9. Rank badge (S/PL, PL, A/PL) as appropriate.
  10.  Ireland Flash (either the tri-colour or the euro version)
  11.  Proficiency badges as awarded.
  12. Special badges (jamborees, etc.)
Scout leaders wear the same uniform but without proficiency badges.

Uniforms are worn at;
  1. Meetings in the Den.
  2. When travelling to or from and event
  3. At special occasions
  4. Other occasions as determined by the Leaders/Group Council
Uniforms need not be worn during various activities. The trousers are designed to be rugged enough for most activities. Note: the neckerchief MUST be worn at all times during scouting activities.

The uniform is available from:
The Outdoor Adventure Centre,
Liffey Street,
Dublin 1.

Scout Activity Gear

The Scouts will try to supply most of the activity equipment required but each scout should a certain amount of personal gear suitable for activities in the outdoors.

Minimum gear;
  1. 'The Scouting Trail'. This book is the definitive description of scouting activities and is used in programming, camping, hiking etc.
  2. A rucksac capable of holding all their gear. It is important that this 'fits' the scout so that it can be carried comfortably.
  3. A sleeping bag (ideally a mummy bag) rated to -12 degrees.
  4. A sleeping mat to insulate the bag from the ground.
  5. A proper pair of hiking boots (runners, boots, shoes are either dangerous, inappropriate, liable to wet or just uncomfortable). Scouts will NOT be allowed to participate on hikes or camps without proper footwear.
  6. A pair of outdoor trousers (not jeans, jeans wet easily and, once wet, will absorb heat from the body to dry making the scout cold. Cold on the hills is always bad news. Scouts arriving for outdoor activities in jeans will be sent home. The Scout trousers are suitable for outdoor use.
  7. Wet gear, an anorak and a pair of water proof trousers dramatically increases the comfort level of scouts in the outdoors during bad weather.
  8. Camp cutlery and crockery (marked with the names).
  9. A small Swiss army type knife for pioneering, and a myriad of other cutting things that have to be done.
  10.  A 'bivvy' bag. The bivvy bag is a large orange plastic bag that can be used as an emergency shelter, can keep gear dry, can be used as a signal.
  11.  A plastic referee type whistle. Not metal, on a cold winter day a metal whistle will stick to the scouts lips. The whistle is essential on the mountains to help keep a group together.
Optional extras;
  1. A compass (silva type).
  2. A survival blanket (silver lined sheet).
  3. A pair of gaiters to go over the tops of the boots. Stops stones etc. falling into the boot and keeps water out of the boot.
  4. Small torch (a head torch is best as it allows the scout to kee his or her hands free) LED torchs last a long time between battery changes.
  5. Flint and striker.
